• Always seek permission: Before touching or interacting with the horse, politely ask the owner for permission. Respect their response, whether it’s a yes or no.
• Introduce yourself: If the owner agrees, approach the horse slowly and speak to it gently. A soft, kind voice helps the horse feel comfortable and safe.
• Offer your hand with care: Extend a closed hand slowly for the horse to smell. If the horse lowers its head or turns toward you, it’s a welcoming gesture, signaling its acceptance.
• Pet wisely: Gently stroke the horse on its neck rather than its face. If the horse moves away, be attentive and stop petting immediately.
• Stay mindful of positioning: Never stand directly behind a horse or sneak up on it from the back. Horses can be startled easily, and you want to avoid spooking them.
• Maintain a safe distance if needed: If a horse rears or kicks, calmly back away at least 15 feet to give the animal space and time to relax.
