1-1 Goalie Attack Tips from a Gold Medalist

Posted by Jordan Snider on Oct 26, 2018 4:30:50 AM

Alex Danson is a 33 year old English international field hockey player, who plays as a forward.  Alex has received a number of awards and in 2017 led the team as England Women's Hockey Captain through to the last four in the semi finals of the world league.   Alex is the founder of the Alex Danson Hockey Academy, with the goal of introducing children to field hockey in their schools to increase awareness and participation in hockey at a grass roots level.

Alex has 100 career goals and 300 caps to her name and a Gold Medal from the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with Great Britain Hockey.  Stx.com shares an interview with gold medalist Alex Danson on the best way to go 1-1 with the goalie:

  1. Practice, practice practice.  Work with goalies to improve overall technique and try out new maneuvers. Also, try working with rebound boards and nets to simulate actual game experience.
  2. Don't overthink your shots.  Work on getting the ball to the goal.  Remember, “You miss 100 percent of the chances you never take.”
  3. On approaching a defender, move them, spin them and lift the ball around them. "If you’re able to execute all three of those as you attack, you’ll throw the defender off balance, decreasing the chances of them blocking or deflecting your shot."
