Pre-game jitters before a big game are a common emotional state for many athletes. Hockey Performance Academy shares some tips to help you mentally prepare and assuage your nerves:
- Save your mental energy for the game, work out other distractions before the game or hold to coming back to them after the game is over.
- Train yourself to leave the analytical side of your brain on the sidelines and once you step on the field let your instinctive part of the brain rule as it is better at making precise snap decisions.
- Know and practice under the conditions that you will be playing in for the games. For example, prepare for playing in colder or warmer climates, different turfs, time of day, etc.
- Prepare physically for a game with the right amount of sleep, hydration, right nutrition, rest, exercise and stretching, etc.
- Keep in mind that you need to roll with surprises as anything can happen, think flexibility.
- Meet every game with the same preparedness, don't allow an opposing team's reputation to derail your level of preparation.
- Concentrate on the moment, don't allow a slow or bad start to deflect your game plan.
Don't forget to have fun before, during, and after the game.
