Too Much Bench Warming?

Posted by Jordan Snider on Mar 5, 2018 5:00:03 AM

Truth be told, every parent thinks that their child is a star athlete. Finding out that your child is spending a lot of time on the bench and not on the field is often very upsetting for both you and your child.  So what can you do as a parent to talk with your child's coach without breaching courtesy.  Inside Baseball shares some good tips:

  • Familiarize yourself with your child's league's rules on playing time.
  • Find time that works for your coach outside of practice and game time to calmly discuss your concerns about your child's playing time.

What happens if the coach shares that your child does not seem to be really interested in the sport.  What do you do then?  Here are some options to think about:

  • Consider igniting the fire back into your child's belly by taking the time to practice regularly together.   Strong skills require, time, patience and repetition.  Use all available resources to support your child.
  • Consistently validate your child when they do well and clearly identify the reasons for your praise, so that they know exactly what they are doing right.
  • Consider taking a field trip together and watch a semi-professional or professional team play.  There is nothing like live sports to have your child connect with the game.

Whatever you do to help your child find their love for the sport will also bring you both the gift of time spent together.
