With summer approaching, the idea of enrolling your children in summer camp becomes more and more appealing. It gives them a sense of routine, allows them to meet new friends, and teaches them life skills that they’ll never forget.

But which type of camp should you choose?

There are two primary types of summer camps: Traditional camps and specialty camps. Both offer an amazing experience, but they differ slightly in how they operate.

Here’s what you need to know about traditional camps and specialty camps.

How do Traditional Camps and Specialty Camps Differ?

Traditional summer camps typically don’t specialize in any particular area. When your child goes off to a traditional summer camp, they’ll experience all sorts of different activities and sports. Depending on the camp chosen, this could be anything from basketball and soccer to arts and crafts. Kids also have the opportunity to learn leadership skills, improve their social skills, and meet new people.

Specialty summer camps put more focus and emphasis on one particular activity. When you send your child to a specialty camp, you’ll have the option to choose different specialties depending on the camp and the location. For example, a basketball camp or a science camp.

Although specialty camps focus on certain areas, children still have the opportunity to learn new skills and have diverse experiences. Kids will learn leadership and social skills within their specialty camp that can transfer into their everyday lives. It’s also worth noting that many specialty camps mix things up by offering other outdoor activities to mix up the experience.

Which Camp is Right For My Child?

In general, both camps serve similar purposes—to provide children with a developmental and fun camp experience while giving them opportunities to grow, learn, and meet new friends.

Traditional summer camps could be a better option for children who haven’t yet focused on a particular passion. For them, the chance to experience all sorts of activities could spark interest in a new activity.

Specialty camps are perfect for children who have already picked their passion and are looking to learn more or improve their skills.

At the end of the day, only you know your child. Both types of camps provide an unforgettable camp experience that children will never forget while being an important part of their maturation. How does Future Stars mix things up?

Future Stars is a specialty summer camp. From sports to S.T.E.A.M. academics to outdoor adventure to the arts, we’ve got camps for just about any interest and all levels. We do understand that it’s important to mix things up from time to time. In addition to balancing focused work and energizing recreational time, one of the primary activities we have to break up the day is with swim times. Who doesn’t love swimming in the summertime?

Some of our camp locations also have certain activities to break up the day as well, such as water park activities or game tents.

Children at Future Stars will learn the fundamentals and advanced skills related to their camp choice from expert coaches and teachers. However, our primary purpose is to provide the camp experience that children will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
